Car Wars: 1,300+ Downloads in Month One — a Mobile App Validated, Planned, and Shipped for a Trade-Show Deadline
Car Wars, a Call Box company whose cloud phone system serves automotive sales teams, needed a mobile app — texting, softphone, performance dashboard, push — in seven months, with no in-house mobile team. A Validation, Design & Planning (VDP) engagement first, then the build: 1,300+ downloads in the first month, a 99.7% bug-free rate, and a 5-star App Store rating.
What they were up against.
Car Wars’ customers — sales professionals in the automotive sector — increasingly worked away from a desk, and the cloud phone system they relied on had no mobile experience. Leadership set an ambitious goal: a mobile app that could headline a major industry trade show seven months out, with texting, softphone dialing, a sales-performance dashboard, and push notifications. The company had no in-house mobile development expertise, and the deadline could not move.
- Customers demanding mobile-first tools; nothing to offer them
- No in-house mobile development capability
- A fixed, public trade-show deadline seven months away
- Feature-rich scope with no room for a false start
How we did it.
VDP first — validate, design, plan
Rather than start coding against a deadline, we ran a Validation, Design & Planning engagement: facilitated workshops with stakeholders, user research with the sales professionals who would use the app, and a shared definition of what success at the trade show meant. Detailed technical designs came out of it, along with a plan that left room for what would come after launch.
Prioritize what lands first
Texting, softphone dialing, real-time performance metrics, and intelligent notifications — the features with the most immediate impact for a salesperson on the move — went first. Everything else queued behind them.
Build with the client in the room
A focused development phase with the client's product team alongside ours, so every feature stayed aligned with their vision and the realities of the automotive sales environment.
Launch on the deadline
The app shipped in time to be showcased at the trade show — and then kept its promises in the field.
What changed.
- Within one month of launch: 1,300+ downloads, a 99.7% bug-free rate (four bugs reported in month one), and a 5-star rating on the Apple App Store.
- Users began integrating the app into daily workflows and requesting new features.
- What began as a customer-experience gap became a competitive advantage, and the trade-show showcase marked the client as a mobile-first leader in its sector.
The system.
Mobile communication app
Texting and softphone dialing on the customer's existing cloud phone platform, a dashboard of sales-performance metrics, and push notifications — designed for use between showroom conversations.
A VDP that de-risked the build
Workshops, user research, technical design, and a prioritized roadmap — the artifacts the client owns and the reason a seven-month deadline held.
The VDP process has been really good in aligning all of us to what a final deliverable would be.
